Penderyn

Distilling is nothing new to Wales – in fact it’s in our blood. The family of Evan Williams had a still in Pembrokeshire, before emigrating to what is now the USA and becoming one of the pioneers of Bourbon. However, since the closure of the Welsh Whisky Distillery in Frongoch in North Wales in 1903, whisky-making fell out of practice in the country.

That is until Penderyn came along. What began as a conversation in a Valleys pub about bringing distillation back to Wales has now grown into the country’s best-known whisky brand. Based in the eponymous village of Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons, the company started distilling in 2000, releasing its first bottles in 2004. They have since expanded to include two more distilleries in Llandudno and Swansea, and have been steadily growing around the world.
The liquid itself is made using malted barley and fresh natural spring water from the Welsh Valleys around Penderyn. It is distilled in a Faraday still unique to Penderyn, and the signature style is to finish ageing the whisky in Madeira casks. The resulting single malt whiskies are delicious and unique.
