The first vine in Llanerch Vineyard was planted in 1986, as a retirement project of then-owners Peter and Diane. Peter suggested using a 2-acre plot for the vines, but Diane had bigger ambitions – she personally planted over 2000 vines, encompassing a variety of French and German grapes such as Triomphe, Bachus and Richenstiner. They produced their first bottle of wine in 1989, and named it Cariad, as it was for their daughter’s wedding.
Fast forward to 2010, and Ryan and his family took over Llanerch. Having worked on vineyards in Australia and New Zealand, Ryan and his father Gwyn saw the huge potential to blend winemaking with hospitality, turning the old farmhouse from the 1800s into a hotel. Beginning with 11 bedrooms, it expanded in 2019 to include 26 more. It is now regarded not only as somewhere which makes excellent Welsh wine, but also a top hotel, holding the distinction of AA Best Hotel in Wales.
